Catfish generally have whiskers (barbels) which led to the "cat" name. Many have rasping/sucking mouth parts. The key difference between catfish and scaly fish (some of which have barbels: barbel, loaches, etc) is their lack of scales; their body is often protected by boney armoured plates under skin.
