The Pictus Catfish, a long-whiskered species, is native to shallow, flowing river tributaries and streams of the Amazon and Orinoco regions and is active mainly at dawn and dusk.

The "pictus" part of their name relates to the "painted" spots. They grow to just over 10cm long and have sharp spines on the pectoral and dorsal fins. They are gregarious fish.
