Juvenile with larger spots
The Golden Nugget, Baryancistrus xanthellus, is native to Brazil's Xingu river and grows to some 22cm long. This one is also
called the Orange Fin Pleco.
There are several similar dark plecos with bright yellow, gold or orange spots, some with yellow edges to fins.
Some are named and some have only a reference number and have yet to be fully described. All are native to their particular area
of a river basin in the northern half of South America. Several in the Baryancistrus genus are called Golden Nuggets.
This is one of several species called "Golden Nugget". Its background is darker than the Sunshine Pleco,
almost black, and the mouth and barbels are the same colour as the head/body.
This may be another "Golden Nugget". The adult has no yellow on its fins.
(Looks like Golden Cloud Pleco of Rio Xingu/Rio Tocantins, L048 Scobinancistrus cf. pariolispos
but that adult has whiter spots than the yellow here. Ruled out Thousand Spots Pleco, L253 Scobinancistrus spp. as the
one shown here has no visible yellow round the mouth and pectoral fin edges.)
