Several similar-shaped catfish are called "plecos" though they are not in the same genus as Hypostomus plecostomus.
The Red Gibbiceps is one of several Sailfin "Plecos", cryptically-patterned (for camouflage), armoured, medium-sized catfish native to the Americas. Also
called the Spotted Sailfin (as are others), it is native to slow-moving waters of the Amazon and Orinoco basins.
It can grow to about half a metre long. Diet is mainly algae but includes dead fish and debris.
Juveniles have larger spots, which reduce as they grow.
