Red Gibbiceps Sailfin Pleco Pterygoplichthys (Ancistrus/Glyptoperichthys) gibbiceps

Several similar-shaped catfish are called "plecos" though they are not in the same genus as Hypostomus plecostomus. The Red Gibbiceps is one of several Sailfin "Plecos", cryptically-patterned (for camouflage), armoured, medium-sized catfish native to the Americas. Also called the Spotted Sailfin (as are others), it is native to slow-moving waters of the Amazon and Orinoco basins.

It can grow to about half a metre long. Diet is mainly algae but includes dead fish and debris. Juveniles have larger spots, which reduce as they grow.

In the dry season, it will keep moist in burrows dug up to a metre into muddy river banks.
