The Beisa Oryx, also called the East African Oryx, is native to eastern Africa. Like all Oryx, both male and female have horns
- the one above has had his horns reduced to half size. Also like other Oryx, the Beisa can survive dry, desert heat and scarcity of water,
getting the moisture needed from plants and tubers. Unlike other Oryx, which tend to single sex herds, the Beisa form small, female-led, mixed
herds with the dominant male guarding the rear.
The Beisa (above) is closely related to the similar Gemsbok Oryx (Oryx gazella) of southern Africa, but has
no black/dark brown on its hind legs nor at the base of its tail (and is genetically distinct).
