The Scimitar-horned Oryx, also called the Scimitar Oryx, of North Africa is extinct in the wild.
In addition to habitat loss it was hunted with cars and guns for its horns.
Like other oryx, it can live in extreme desert heat by raising its body temperature and can cope with scarcity of water.
Like all oryx, both male and female have horns. The dark eye shadow is designed to look like a continuation of the horn (horn appearing even longer than it is).
The new-born calf is light brown.
The young Oryx growing their horns.
The juvenile Oryx resembles a goat.
P. S. In 2016, the Scimitar Oryx was reintroduced to the edge of the Sahara in Chad as part of a programme of conservation breeding
and reintroduction to the wild.
