Axis Deer, also called Chital, are native to the Indian sub-continent.
Both hind (female, above left) and stag (male, above right) have spotted coats all year and white throats.
They live in herds of mixed gender with one or more dominant adult stags.
The white bar on the hind's lower flank is straighter than that of the Sika hind which is angled.
Stags re-grow their antlers each year; the antlers start rounded and soft with "velvet" covering and become hard horn with sharp edges.
The summer coat is redder and the winter coat browner.
