The Hog Deer is a small, stocky deer from northern India, Pakistan and Southeast Asia. It is also called the Indian Hog Deer to distinguish from some island species.

Some 2 feet tall at the shoulder (stags c. 3 inches taller than hinds), the stag (above left/centre) has antlers, the hind (above right) does not.

The Hog Deer is named after its pig-like manner of flight (no pigs don't fly) with head down to go under obstacles rather than head up to leap over them and with white tail tip held high.

Hog Deer summer coat The spotted summer coat.
The winter coat of stags and hinds is plain brown and the spring/summer breeding coat is reddish brown with faint white spots and a darker central spine. Fawns of some subspecies have spots.
