The African Butterfly Cichlid is native to well-vegetated forest streams of West Africa (Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone).
A small cichlid, it grows to some 6-8 cm long.
The pinkish, sparkling body with black stripes or patches can be reminiscent the Butterfly Barb of similar habitat in Angola and D. R. Congo
and, although not related, one may have influenced the naming of the other. (The African Butterflyfish, see link below, also of west and central Africa,
is totally unrelated and dissimilar.)
