The African Swamphen with its green back and turquoise face was previously classed as a subspecies of the Purple Swamphen.
Like the other subspecies, it has huge red legs and feet and a red beak and face-shield.
It is native to sub-Saharan Africa. Like its European (Mediterranean, including North Africa) counterpart,
the African (sub-Sahara) bird has iridescent blue wing feathers and the characteristic white rump of the moorhen species.
The chicks are black and also similar to those of Moorhens.
