Allen's Gallinule, previously called the Lesser Gallinule, is native to heavily-vegetated freshwater wetlands
of sub-Saharan Africa, breeding in West Africa and migrating south in the dry season.
Like other swamphens and rails, it has huge red (orange) legs and feet, a red beak and a face-shield.
The face-shield is blue on males and greenish on females.
Juveniles, above, have brown, patterned plumage. The chicks are black, similar to those of moorhens.
