The Grey-headed Swamphen is native to the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, southern China and Thailand. It used to be considered a
subspecies of the similar-looking Western Purple Swamphen and is often still called Purple Swamphen or Gallinule. It was made a full species in 2015.
It has been introduced to Florida and added to the American list of birds in 2013.
The male presents water plants to the female in a noisy courtship ritual.
