The Peruvian Pelican has a dark body streaked with white (can sometimes appear white-backed - see below) and a prominent dark brown neck
with white head/crown and white lateral line down sides of its neck. The lower bill usually has a dark pouch.
It inhabits not only coastal Peru but also coastal Chile.

The Peruvian Pelican used to be classed as a subspecies of the American Brown Pelican but is now a separate species.
Breeding adults have reddish bills. The species is described as near threatened, mainly through
competition with humans for anchovies, its main diet.
