Like the Macaws and Amazons, the Conures are native to South and Central America and the Caribbean. The (former) Latin name of many conures is "
Aratinga", - "little macaw".
Most Aratinga conures with plain green plumage or red on green have been moved to genus
Psittacara.
The Green Conure/Parakeet (silly name, most are basically green),
Psittacara (prev.Aratinga) holochlora, is native to Mexico/Central America.
Some can even have a red brow, although most are almost entirely green. They can also have a white eyering
and look similar to the White-eyed Conure (see below).
The Red-throated Conure, Psittacara (prev.Aratinga) (holochlora) rubritorquis of Central America
can be orange- or red-throated.
It used to be classed as a subspecies of the Green Conure above but is now mostly considered a separate species.
The White-eyed Conure (conures are nearly all "white-eyed"), Psittacara (prev. Aratinga) leucophthalma,
is native to northern South America.
Like chickens, they have a need to cross roads.
The Hispaniolan Conure, Psittacara (prev.Aratinga) chloroptera, is native to the island of Hispaniola
(Dominican Republic/Haiti). Similar to the Green and the White-eyed above, it has a distinctive red "shoulder" and "under-shoulder".
The Cuban Conure, Psittacara (prev.Aratinga) euops, is native to much of Cuba.
Also called the Red-speckled Conure, it is also similar to the Green and the White-eyed above.
It has various red speckling on the face and the wing and a red and yellow underwing.
