Bank Vole and Field Vole: mouse-size, total length 8-12 cm. Water Vole: rat-size, 14-22 cm.
Seen head-on, a vole doesn't have those "mickey mouse" stuck up ears.
Bank Vole: chestnut brown, sleek, tail a half of body length, wood/shrub cover.
Field Vole: grey-brown, shaggy, tail about a third of body length, open grassland.
These Bank Voles moved into my back garden in North London.
Bank Voles have rich chestnut-coloured fur with a white underside.
They liked the RSPB bird pellets . . .
some of which were eaten on the spot and some carried back in bulk to their food store.
The body can be quite extended like a dachshund.
The Robin wasn't impressed that his food was being stolen.
