The Red River Hog is a wild pig native to tropical forests of West and Central Africa.
It has rusty orange fur with blackish or grey face and legs, white ear tufts, spectacles and cheek line
and a white dorsal stripe.
It is related to the less orange, white-/grey-faced Bush Pig, Potamochoerus larvata,
a wild pig of East and Southern Africa.
They love to lie down in rows. The Red River Hog is mainly nocturnal. Herds of females (sows) and young (piglets and
juveniles) are protected by a dominant male (boar) who assists in raising the young.
The Red River Hog is now rare outside protected areas and thousands continue to be killed for the bushmeat trade.
