Blackbuck (Antelope) Antilope cervicapra

The Blackbuck Antelope is native to the Indian sub-continent and lives in small herds on grassy plains in a few remaining areas of its original range. Only the male, with his long, spiral horns, is a "black buck," - or dark chocolate brown with white undersides - the female and young are light fawn and without horns.

Both male and female have a wide border of white round the eye. They are the only member of the genus Antilope.

Blackbuck live in herds of a few dozen, with one dominant, breeding male with a black upper coat and subordinate males with brown upper coats (a little darker than those of the females).

One of the fastest antelopes and mammals, Blackbuck can run at over 80 km/h.
