There are two species of Chimpanzee, also called Chimp, the Common Chimpanzee from West and Central Africa and the Bonobo (Pan paniscus) from the Congo. Both species are of similar appearance but have different diets and social habits. This page concerns the Common Chimpanzee.

The Common Chimpanzee has a more aggressive, male-dominated society and omnivorous diet. Groups consist of several males and females of all ages, a dominant alpha male and a complex social hierarchy. By contrast, the Bonobo has a relatively non-violent, more egalitarian, matriarchal society and a more vegetarian diet.
