The Spectacled Bear, also called the Andean Bear, is the only remaining bear native to South America.
It lives in the northern Andean forests.
The light pattern on its dark face can often take the shape of spectacle frames, giving it its common name.
In additon to the "spectacles" (not all facial markings are spectacles), it has a light muzzle and
often has light speckling or patches around the face or neck on an otherwise black or very dark brown coat.
The Spectacled Bear is largely vegetarian, but does eat some meat.
Males and females have a similar appearance but males are usually significantly larger.
Its status in the wild is "vulnerable" due to habitat loss, particularly loss of trees, and to hunting.
