The Brown Bear is native to the northern forests of Scandinavia, Russia, Alaska and Canada, and also to forest areas of Balkan/Carparthian Eastern Europe,
the Middle East and China/Tibet. The largest subspecies, the Kodiak Bear of Alaska, is as big as the Polar Bear, both being the largest land-based predator.
This page shows the European Bear subspecies Ursus arctos arctos.
Brown Bears are mainly solitary except when mating or raising young.
Males and females have a similar appearance but males are usually larger. Coat colour can range from honey beige to very dark brown.
They enjoy water, especially in hot weather.
