The Rodrigues Fruit Bat, also called the Rodrigues Flying Fox Bat, is native to the Mauritian island of Rodrigues.
Endemic to their tiny island, the population was down to about 100, decimated by deforestation (human and weather).
Fruit Bats perform a useful role in dispersal of seeds and pollen.
Conservation and captive breeding/reintroduction programmes are now underway to preserve the species.
