There are 29 species of Brown Lacewing in the UK, several look very similar.
This one may be Hemerobius stigma, found in UK and much of the Northern Hemisphere.
The Brown Lacewings' habits are similar to those of its Green cousins, mainly nocturnal, attracted to light and its larvae eat
copious numbers of aphids and garden pests.
The adult Brown Lacewings also tend to eat more insect pests than nectar (unlike their Green counterparts).
This one, also in NW London, is Micromus variegatus, common throughout the UK
and much of the Northern Hemisphere.
The distinctive Hook-winged Lacewing, Drepanepteryx phalaenoides,
is also included under "Brown Lacewings."
