Katydids are related to bush crickets.
The Giant Katydid, sometimes called Florida Giant Katydid, is native to Florida and Cuba.
Wonderfully camouflaged as a leaf, Katydids can fly and the body, when revealed, looks cricket-like.
Some 6-7cm long, they live in tropical forests and eat leaves and fruit.
They are mainly nocturnal, pretending to be a leaf in the day. Above left is an older nymph just
beginning to grow its adult wings.
The female will chew a leaf or stem to rough it up before laying 100-150 eggs which are glued into it.
