The Cardinal Tetra is native to tributaries in the upper Orinoco and Rio Negro basins in northeast South America.
It has a full red stripe together with the full luminous turquoise stripe, unlike the related Neon Tetra which has a red half stripe on its rear half.
The name cardinal is from the red colour of the fish (itself from the red worn by church cardinals).
They grow only to 3cm long and are shoaling fish that hide among vegetation. They migrate upstream to spawn in darker, more-shaded waters.
