Chromides are Asian cichlids, closely related to the Madagascan Paretroplus genus.
The Green Chromide, also called Banded Pearlspot, is native to freshwater rivers, reservoirs and brakish lagoons and estuaries
in parts of southern India and Sri Lanka.
It is a pale grey-green colour with dark bands and a dark green spot at the base of the pectoral fin.
It grows typically to 20cm and exceptionally to 40cm long. It eats plants, algae and insects.
Young will cling to mothers to feed on nutritious mucus. The fish are threatened by deforestation.
