Various Rails and Crakes

The BUFF-BANDED RAIL (Gallirallus philippensis), native to Australasia and the Philippines, lives in dry and wetland habitats.

It has an orange-brown chest band over the close black and white stripes on its breast which gives it its name.

The DUSKY MOORHEN (Gallinula tenebrosa) of Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia. Similar to its relative the Common Moorhen but with orange legs and face-shield and no white flank.

The BLACK CRAKE (Amaurornis flavirostra/Limnocorax flavirostris/Zapornia flavirostra) is a waterbird native to sub-Saharan Africa. Juveniles are brown. Eats molluscs, crustaceans, insects, worms, small fish, seeds and water plants but will also sit on hippos and warthogs to clean ticks and parasites from them.

The WHITE-BREASTED WATERHEN (Amaurornis phoenicurus) is a waterbird native to South and Southeast Asia

The secretive RED AND WHITE CRAKE (Laterallus leucopyrrhus) is a waterbird native to swamps of the eastern central part of South America.
