The Green-cheeked Amazon is native to northeastern Mexico but is endangered through loss of habitat (lowland forest)
and illegal trapping.
It is also more appropriately called the Red-crowned Amazon (since many Amazons have green
cheeks - but some also have red brows).
The red crown is much brighter than the dark red brow of the Lilac-crowned.
It is said there may be as many living feral in Los Angeles (c.3000) as there are remaining in the wild in Mexico.
Some Green-cheeks, especially younger birds, have just a red brow rather than full red crown and can look
similar to their compatriot, the Lilac-crowned Amazon, but with a green crown devoid of lilac colour.
They are usually vegetarian (although the one above right has chosen to eat an insect).
