The male has a black body with some iridescent dark green or blue markings and a white back, wings and tail, the back and wings marked with a black zigzag pattern; he has a jet black crest, a bright red face wattle and red legs, the latter differentiating him from some subspecies of the related grey-legged Kalij Pheasant.
