Swinhoe's Pheasant Lophura swinhoii

The magnificent Swinhoe's Pheasant is native to the temperate forests of Taiwan. It is named after British ornithologist Robert Swinhoe who described it in 1862.

The male Swinhoe's is glistening blue with claret "shoulders", white crown, white upper back and tail streamers, and a bright red complete face wattle.

The hen has extensive red bare skin around her eye and is unusually patterned for a female pheasant, although still in yellowy brown and black in contrast to the showy male.
