The Japanese Quail of East Asia looks very similar to the Eurasian Common Quail, Coturnix coturnix, of which it was
considered a subspecies as recently as the 1980s. It is native to Southeast Asia and the Russian Far East but is also now
found in India and East Africa in the wild and is common in captivity worldwide.
In captivity, several colour variations of Japanese Quails are bred, one of the most popular being the Golden Quail above.
The wild colouring is as in the top row.
Other plumage variations include white and mixed.
