Fruit Doves are a diverse and colourful genus of fruit-eating, forest-dwelling doves/pigeons from southeast Asia and Australasia.
The male is often more colourful than the female. For the Black-naped (Black-headed) Fruit Dove, only the male has a black nape;
the female is mostly green. They are native to the southern Philippines, Java, Bali and some Malaysian islands.
Above is the male Black-naped Fruit Dove with his black nape, a white head and yellow chin. He also has a yellow lower belly and a partial red undertail.
The female, above, is mostly green with dark wingtips.
Like Imperial Pigeons, the smaller Fruit Doves digest the fruit but pass the seeds undamaged to disperse and regenerate their food plant.
Juveniles have similar plumage to females.
