Quail-doves from the American tropics are medium-sized, ground-dwelling doves which,
although able to fly well, spend most of their time on the ground in shrubbery and forest floors like the Asian
"Gallicolumba" Ground Pigeons.
The Crested Quail-dove has beautiful, iridescent red-purple plumage on back and wings, with reddish wingtips,
an mauve or blue-grey breast and a yellow-orange cheek. It has red eyes and a grey crest after which it is named. It is native to montane forests of Jamaica.
Male and female have similar plumage. Males' plumage is sometimes a little brighter.
They are threatened by habitat clearance for coffee plantations.
