The Madagascan Tree Boa, also called the Malagasy Tree Boa, is native to forests of Madagascar.
A large snake, it is the smallest of the four boas native to Madagascar and can grow to some 6 feet (2 metres).
They are mainly arboreal (when hunting), preferring waterside or swamp trees, and nocturnal.
There were two forms classified as two subspecies but they have now been split into separate species:
the green form (above), previously S. m. madagascariensis, present on the east of the island
and the brown form (below), previously S. m. volontany, present on the west side. Juveniles are red.
The Nosy Komba Ground Boa of the west of Madagascar was until recently considered a subspecies of the
Madagascar Tree Boa. The brown-coloured snakes can reach over 2 metres long. They rest in trees in the day but hunt on the ground at night.
