Green and Black Poison Dart Frog Dendrobates auratus

The Green and Black Poison Dart Frog, also called Green and Black Poison Frog, lives in Central American rainforest, particularly in Panama.

It is a variable species. Not only variations in patterns and of green, black or dark brown background and in shades of green, but some shine with a golden sheen, hence the Latin name "auratus".

Their toxicity comes from the invertebrates they eat and will decline in captivity.

Their lifestyle is semi arboreal and semi terrestrial. When a female has accepted a mate, she will lay eggs which he will fertilise and, when they hatch, he (or both) will then carry the tadpoles attached to mucus on their backs into a tree and deposit them in the pools of water caught in bromeliads. The parents will then guard the tadpoles to maturity.
