It is a variable species. Not only variations in patterns and of green, black or dark brown background and in shades of green, but some shine with a golden sheen, hence the Latin name "auratus".

Their lifestyle is semi arboreal and semi terrestrial. When a female has accepted a mate, she will lay eggs which he will fertilise and, when they hatch, he (or both) will then carry the tadpoles attached to mucus on their backs into a tree and deposit them in the pools of water caught in bromeliads. The parents will then guard the tadpoles to maturity.
