The Radiated Tortoise, named after the fine lines "radiating" out from the centre point of each
section of its shell, is native Madagascar - originally and mainly in the south of the island.
The dark shell with light lines is generally a smooth dome;
however, individuals vary (the pyramids are not just a result of too rich diet as in some species).
The younger tortoises are more sharply marked and the shell darkens with age (unlike Star Tortoises, which lighten with age).
They can live well over 100 years and reach some 40cm length.
A Gecko warms itself on a "radiator".
It is a herbivore.
The Radiated Tortoise is critically endangered. Its population has declined by over 80% in recent years,
caused by habitat loss, poaching for food and collection for the pet trade.
