There are several species of "casque-headed iguanas", also called "cone-headed lizards" in two genera, all native to
Central America. Shown is the Eastern Casque-headed Iguana, also called Eastern Cone-headed Lizard, native to tropical forests of southern Mexico
and northern Central America.
They are mainly arboreal and can run fast on two back legs like basilisks. The long, thin tail makes up some
two thirds of their up to 70cm (28 inches) length.
Their tails do not break off like other lizards, but they can rapidly change colour from green to brown to
camouflage themselves from predators. Both male and female have head casques.
