The Herald is a beautiful moth like a bright orange-red light shining out of a brown lantern. Despite its autumn colour scheme,
it can be found flying much of the year since the adult hibernates (in barns, outhouses, caves) through winter and can fly from March
to June and new generations from June to November (before hibernating). It is native to much of the UK and much of the northern hemisphere
covering Eurasia, North Africa and North America. Wingspan is 38-46mm. Thanks to Martin Starnes for these photos of the adult moth.
