The adult Herald Moth looks striking: large with a red "lantern light" streak on its brown, dead leaf background. Its caterpillar, at first glance, is another green nondescript. It is, however, a very bright yellowy green with an almost luminous look. From above, its narrow dark flank lines can give the top the look of a bright yellow-green lantern panel.

The adult Herald Moth over-winters (in outhouses and caves) and the caterpillars are about from May to July, with a second brood in the south around August, feeding on willow and poplar.
