The Silver Fox is a melanistic form of the common Red Fox.
Silver foxes have a black, charcoal grey, bluish grey or silver coat, sometimes with white,
and occur across the Red Fox range from North America through Europe to Siberia. The white fox above left is leucisitic
and the fox above right shows some red in its coat also.
The white and silver grey form above is called a Sapphire fox (a form of Silver Fox).
The Silver Fox pelt is highly valued for fur garments and Silver Foxes
(often then called Siberian Foxes) are bred in captivity for their fur. They are also kept as pets.
