The Anoa is the smallest species of buffalo and is native to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Pictured is the Lowland Anoa, Bubalus depressicornis, some 3 foot high at the shoulder;
the Mountain Anoa Bubalus quarlesi looks similar but is some 6 inches shorter.
Both male and female of both species have straight pointed horns which they use for defence.
Above left shows a pair, above centre a cow with a calf, and above right a bull.
Unlike other buffalo, Anoa do not live in herds but are solitary.
Related to the Water Buffalo, both live in swampy rain forest and are endangered, mainly due to hunting.
The Lowland Anoa is at high risk of becoming extinct in the wild.
