The Anoa is the smallest species of buffalo and is native to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Pictured is the Lowland Anoa, Bubalus depressicornis, some 3 foot high at the shoulder; the Mountain Anoa Bubalus quarlesi looks similar but is some 6 inches shorter. Related to the Water Buffalo, both live in swampy rain forest and are endangered, mainly due to hunting.

Unlike other buffalo, Anoa do not live in herds but are solitary. Both male and female of both species have straight pointed horns which they use for defence. Top left shows a pair, above left and centre, cows, one with a calf, and above right a bull.
