Black-tailed Marmoset Mico (formerly Callithrix) melanurus

Marmosets have long incisors (front teeth) adapted to chisel small holes in trees to drink sap and gum. Tamarins have longer canine teeth for meat eating. The Black-tailed Marmoset has grey-brown fur with lighter front end, bare pink ears (not as startling as those of its close relative the Silvery Marmoset), a light stripe on its thigh and a long black tail.

It is native to west-central Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northern Paraguay.

Black-tailed Marmoset with baby; twins are usually born and, like other marmosets, both parents and other relatives help to carry and care for the young.
