The Blue-eyed Black Lemur comes from a small area of forest in north-western Madagascar. It is critically endangered, mainly through slash and burn destruction of its habitat.

The male, shown above, has wholly black fur. It can be distinguished from the Black Lemur (Eulemur macaco, previously classed as a subspecies) by its lack of stuck-out ear-tufts/sideburns and its blue eyes, the only primate other than humans and Brown Spider Monkeys to have blue eyes.

The female, above left, is a yellowy ginger-brown (hence the taxonomic name "flavifrons") without neck ruff/side-burns. She also has blue eyes.
