The Greater Bamboo Lemur, also called Broad-nosed Gentle/Bamboo Lemur, is native to limited tracts of
eastern Madagascar - mainly national parks. Its historical range covered a far greater area of the country. It is the largest
of the Bamboo Lemurs with up to 45-50 cm head/body length. Diet is primarily bamboo shoots (with a typical daily content of cyanide
enough to kill a person) but also includes bamboo leaves and other flowers/fruit and fungi. It is one of the most critically endangered
primates in the world, primarily through loss of bamboo habitat by legal and illegal harvesting.
