The Alaotran Bamboo Lemur, native to marshes of Lac Alaotra in northeast Madagascar, is also called the Lac Alaotra Bamboo or Gentle Lemur. Some authorities class it as a subspecies of the Eastern Lesser Bamboo Lemur, Hapalemur griseus.

The Alaotran Bamboo Lemur is the only Bamboo Lemur which does not eat bamboo shoots. It eats the papyrus reeds in which it lives and some grasses.

Lac Alaotra Bamboo Lemur
It is has very small range, scattered population and is classified as Critically Endangered. Major threats include drainage of remaining marsh, rice cultivation around the lake and the annual burning of reedbeds.
