The Southwest African Lion, also called Angolan and Katanga Lion, are native to
not only Angola but also Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. (Those shown are juveniles.)
They are typically the largest and strongest of Africa's lion clades since Cape Buffalo are their key prey species.
Populations remain among the most threatened, with only some 500 or less remaining in the wild.
This increased from some 400 by promotion of sustainable tourism and by conservation breeding which is underway in situ and in zoo parks.
