East African Lion Panthera leo melanochaita (prev. P. l. leo)

The East African Lions shown on this page are from Kenya and Tanzania. They are part of the southern East African clade (excludes Somalia).

Like other African lions, they remain threatened by poisoning, hunting and habitat loss but have some protection in nature reserves bolstered by wildlife tourism.
