The Barbary Lion, also called the Atlas Lion, used to range across the Atlas mountains of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
The largest of the former subspecies, they are now extinct in the wild through hunting; the last wild Barbary Lion was
reportedly shot in 1922 but some claimed sightings through to 1950-1960.
The male can reach 250 kg weight and 3 metres length. The Romans used these lions in gladiator arenas. The King of Morocco
had some in captivity and all present (captive) Barbary Lions are descended from those.
The Lions on this page are Barbary Lions.
