The Ground Beetle Harpalus affinis is native to most of the Palaearctic region from Europe to Siberia, favouring dry habitat including gardens. It is mainly nocturnal but often active in the day, especially in sunshine. It is some 8-12mm long. Males are glossy with a metallic green (usually), blue, bronze, copper or black sheen. Legs are pale orange brown. Females are matt black.
Harpalus rubripes is a similar-looking ground beetle with a similar range. Its limbs are brighter reddish brown.
