The Otjikoto Tilapia, also called Lake Guinas Tilapia, is found naturally in only two small lakes in
Namibia, one of Africa's driest countries.
Despite its common name, it is said to be native only to Lake Guinas and introduced
more recently to Lake Otjikoto.
The tilapia can reach 14cm in length. Males are more colourful than females.
Those in Lake Guinas vary somewhat in appearance, with the differences not entirely accounted for by age/gender.
Both parents guard and tend their eggs and fry. Critically endangered, threats include ground water
extraction and introduction of non-native fish.
