The (Lake) Natron Tilapia, also called the Soda Cichlid, is native to the highly salty "soda" Lake Natron and its drainage
in northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. In addition to high salt content the lake has hot (40 deg. C) springs and is inhospitable to most aquatic life.
Males, with blue spots and yellow and red markings, are more colourful than the plainer females. The Natron Tilapia can reach 12cm in length.
They are endangered mainly due to their limited distribution.
